Is Rx Health Academy Right For Me?

Rx Health Academy is extraordinary, but it isn’t right for everyone. Choose a section below to get answers to the most frequently asked questions so you can make the best decision for you.

Program Overview

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Here at Rx Health Academy we help everyday people like you, who may really want to achieve a career in the healthcare become certified pharmacy technicians, with the convenience of online learning! We are recognized by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board as an approved education program. Through our partnership with major pharmacies like CVS and Walgreens we help our students gain entry-level employment as pharmacy technicians across the United States.

Everything is online — no travel is required.

You have lifetime access to the training, so you can go through the materials each week as they’re released in the student portal, or you can slow things down and work at your own pace.

Rx Health Academy is action-oriented, purpose driven and transformative. We deeply care about you — our students. You get lifetime access to the training.

This program has been running strong since 2014. We’re often imitated, but never duplicated.

We’re constantly updating and improving every aspect of the program, and our alums get those updates free of charge. Over the years, we’ve cultivated a growth-minded experience that helps you create results.

Here is what some students have shared about how the Rx experience is different.

“Took a Penn Foster course this year and no comparison. The program had a good textbook but the personal connection feeling was not there. I felt like a number. And the content was lacking. There was literally no videos or teacher”

“I really like the personal feel to everything. I love that there is so much support everywhere, but also that the team is willing to call us out on things as well to make us better. ”

“Rx Health Academy is different because it breaks down the lessons so that it's easy to understand. I had so many negative ideas about online learning. It was a complete change for me once I became a CPhT.”

“Your course has many distinct advantages that most colleges and universities don’t: you are personally engaged with the students; you rely on personalized communications to keep students engaged; you combine a ton of video with relevant worksheets; you do a good job of battling the loss of motivation that many students have by keeping in touch very regularly.”

We recommend between 2-4 hours per week to watch the training, complete your assignments and — if you’d like — engage with your instructor in live workshops.

Many of our students go through the program as best they can; pausing and returning to it as their schedule allows.

If you’re not able to carve out that much time at first, don’t worry. You get lifetime access to the training and can easily work at your own pace, on your own schedule. Most of our students have full-time jobs and/or families. This experience is designed to stretch you, but it can also be customized to your life.

The more focus and dedication you put into Rx Health Academy, the more you’ll get out of it. Other factors that affect how much time you’ll need to complete Rx Health Academy include:

  • How much tenacity you have to finish
  • Your comfort level with basic technology
  • Whether or not you participate in the comments and workshops
  • Whether or not you choose to complete every piece of coursework

To be clear, there are no fast or guaranteed results. Building a career that matters is not an 8 week, linear event. This program mirrors the reality of life — it’s intense, time consuming, demanding and something you’ll have to work on.

We outline the course breakdown, including our core curriculum and additional resources included on our home page. We cover all nine knowledge domains covered on the PTCE.

Rx Health Academy is a transformative experience. It’s action oriented and intense. It’s not about access to secret videos or hidden information. It’s about doing the work, brining the best out of our students, leveraging your unique strengths and getting challenged to grow into your full potential. You will study and at times that will be difficult - that is the reality of life.

The real value is in the skills and capabilities you’ll develop to apply to the workforce. In our humble opinion, who you’ll become as a result of completing our program is priceless.

We outline the specific course breakdown, including the core curriculum and additional resources included here.

Broadly speaking, we don’t cover advanced algebra skills; however we do provide outside resources for those of you who feel they might need additional support. We do however go in detail with pharmacy math and a basic math review.

Yes! According to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics (BLS), employment of pharmacy technicians is expected to increase by 9% from 2014 to 2024. The BLS also suggests that pharmacy technicians with formal education or training, previous work experience, and national certification will be specifically sought after to meet these demands.

Learn all about hands on experience through our program.

The pharmacy technician externship provides students hands-on training in community and institutional pharmacy practice. The goal of the required externship is to produce competent pharmacy technicians by developing the essential skill sets through hands-on experience. Students will practice under the direct supervision of a registered pharmacist. This externship consists of 160 hours of clinical experience in a community pharmacy to be completed in 8 to 12 weeks.

  • Demonstrate pharmacy technician competencies within a pharmacy practice setting as defined on the student evaluation form.

An externship coordinator will work with CVS or Walgreens to place you at a local store location. Start date is subject to Pharmacy Manger. Acceptance into the required externship component of this program requires: passing a background check and a 10-panel drug screen, BLS CPR Certification in some states and having a minimum cumulative grade average of 70%. All costs associated with the externship are the responsibility of the student.

Illicit drug use, criminal background checks, and immunization status may prevent future employment as a pharmacy technician.

Externship sites, employers, and State Boards of Pharmacy have regulations about drug use and criminal backgrounds.

No, the externship is not paid; however it is a valuable opportunity to network for employment and gain hands on experience.

No, however you will gain valuable career connections that may lead to a job after the program.

Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam

Answers to questions about the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam.

The Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) is the gold standard of credentialing for pharmacy technicians.

The Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB®) offers the CPhT credential to individuals who wish to distinguish themselves in the pharmacy technician field.

PTCB’s certification program enables technicians to work more effectively with pharmacists to offer safe and effective patient care and service.

Most employers and state board of pharmacies require, their pharmacy technicians be PTCB CPhTs.

  • High school diploma or equivalent educational diploma (e.g., a GED or foreign diploma)*
  • Full disclosure of all criminal and State Board of Pharmacy registration or licensure actions
  • Compliance with all applicable PTCB certification policies
  • Passing score on the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam® (PTCE®)

*Candidates who are within 60 days of acquiring their high school diploma or equivalent will be eligible to take the PTCE.

If you would like to learn how to become a certified pharmacy technician we recommend you start by taking our free introductory course here.

National Certification

Certification is a voluntary process by which a non-governmental agency (like PTCB) recognizes an individual who has met qualifications specified by that organization. This formal recognition is granted to provide public evidence that the individual has attained the necessary level of knowledge, skill, and/or experience in a well-defined area.

Certification usually requires an initial assessment and periodic reassessments of the individual’s knowledge, skills and/or experience - such as through PTCB's Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam (PTCE) and the completion of pharmacy technician-specific continuing education programs.

State Registration Processes

Registration is the process of enrolling or renewing on a list of pharmacy technicians. Registration is intended to help safeguard the public through interstate and intrastate tracking of the technician workforce and preventing individuals with documented problems from serving as pharmacy technicians. As of April 2016, 34 states and the District of Columbia register pharmacy technicians.

Licensure is the process by which an agency of government (state or federal) gives an individual permission to engage in a given occupation upon recognizing that the applicant has attained the minimum competency necessary to ensure that the public health, safety, and welfare will be reasonably well protected. Within the pharmacy profession, pharmacists are licensed by state boards of pharmacy. As of April 2016, 11 states license pharmacy technicians.

Why is this important?

In some states, it may be necessary to maintain active PTCB certification, in addition to registering with the state board of pharmacy. Technicians should contact the Board of Pharmacy in the state they work to determine which requirements apply to them.

A panel of content experts established a passing score for the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam® (PTCE®) using industry best practices.

The method used by the panel, as directed by a psychometrician, is known as the modified-Angoff method. This method requires that field experts (panel members) evaluate individual test items and estimate the percentage of qualified pharmacy technicians that would be able to answer correctly.

These estimates were analyzed for consistency and averaged to produce the passing score. The passing score and all candidate results are reported as scaled scores.

The passing scaled score for the updated PTCE is 1400, with a range of possible scores of 1000 to 1600.

Candidates must apply and pay for each PTCE attempt. Candidates who fail the PTCE must wait 60 days from the most recent attempt to apply for the second and third attempts, and 6 months for attempts thereafter. After four attempts, candidates must provide completion evidence of acceptable preparation activities to PTCB for review and approval before applying for additional attempts. Preparation activities completed prior to the most recent attempt will not be considered. Acceptable preparation activities include any of the following:

  • Six months or more of tutoring by a pharmacist or PTCB CPhT (PTCE Preparation Attestation Form Required)
  • Completion of a formal review course or non-accredited training program
  • Graduation from a pharmacy technician associate degree (A.S.) program

Candidates are not limited to a finite number of exam attempts, although candidates are strongly encouraged to prepare for each attempt. The PTCE is a very reliable exam, which means that candidates who fail the exam should expect to fail again unless they increase their knowledge of the PTCE content through additional preparation.

In order to recertify your CPhT certification, PTCB requires that you:

Earn 20 pharmacy technician-specific continuing education (CE) hours, including:

  • 1 hour specifically in the subject of pharmacy law
  • 1 hour specifically in the subject of patient safety

CE programs must be completed within your two-year certification period. The specific date range in which you may earn your CE hours can be found on the homepage of your PTCB Account, under the Manage My Certification section.
